New York CityAbout New York City NYC HistoryMain Article: The History of NYC In the early 20th century, around 1898, New York City was consolidated into five boroughs to form the new government originally called "Greater New York." These five boroughs included Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Bronx County. The New York City Subway first opened in 1904, helping to bind the new city together. The railroads operating out of Grand Central Terminal thrived. New York City became the most populous city in the world in 1925. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the city became a world center for industry, commerce, and communication. A great influx of European immigrants created social up upheaval. In the 1920s, the Great Migration of African Americans from the American South and the Harlem Renaissance occurred during the Prohibition era and the time of a skyline of skyscrapers. World War One disrupted trade routes, while the Immigration Restriction Acts served in stopping the rise of crime and poverty in New York City. The Great Depression ended the need for new labor. As labor unionization began protecting the working class, the city underwent a dramatic overhaul under LaGuardia, ending many tenement areas, expanding parks, re-building streets, zone control. Resilient from the effects of the Great Depression, New York City saw the building of some of the world's tallest skyscrapers in the 1930s, many which are part of the city's skyline today.
